Freshman Abe Ahlberg was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Northwood/Solon Springs got another big offensive performance to down host Winter/Birchwood 10-5 Thursday, April 29, in high school baseball.
Ahlberg also had three runs and three stolen bases. Fellow freshmen Dylan Taggart (3x4, 2B, 3B, 3R, 2SB) and Tanner Carlson (2x4, R, RBI) and senior Collin Krmpotich (H, R, RBI, 2SB) also had good offensive performances.
“Big night by the freshmen,” coach Nate Ahlberg said. “Kaden Corlett got his first high school win in relief of Ben Monson. Abe Ahlberg, Tanner Carlson and Dylan Taggart had seven of our 10 hits. Going into the fifth, our early 4-0 lead was cut to 4-3. Tanner had an RBI single and Dylan followed with a double down the third base line. Abe then drove them all home with a line-drive home run to left center.”
Corlett worked two innings of no-hit relief work, with two strikeouts to help offset four walks. Monson struggled with his control but should get better only five months removed from an anterior cruciate ligament tear that ended his football season.
“Ben is a senior captain. He got the start tonight and was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the first,” Ahlberg said. “He struggled with command, walking eight in his three innings. But I didn’t think he’d be able to play at all this year. He worked hard to rehab the knee with the hopes of getting innings this spring. I’m so happy to have him back on the field, and I know he’ll work to improve on tonight’s performance.”
Northwood/Solon Springs (2-0) hosts Ashland Saturday, May 1, in Solon Springs, and Clear Lake Tuesday, May 4, in Northwood.
