Elliot Danhoff and David Dibble earned pitching wins as Wisconsin-Superior earned its first wins of the season, 2-1 and 4-3 over Minnesota-Morris in a seven-inning nonconference doubleheader Tuesday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Danhoff only allowed one hit and struck out nine in just four innings in the opener, while Nick Fredrikson and Brandon Rolf scored UWS’ lone runs in the top half of the first. That’s all Yellowjackets pitching would need as Kaleb Beane, Matt Tappe and Ryan Rodriguez relieved Danhoff and closed it out in style, with the four pitchers combining on 15 strikeouts.
Dibble scattered five hits and struck out two in four innings in the rematch.
UWS’ Nick Zezulka and Josh Hukriede scored runs in the second inning and Rolf and Bryce Flanagan scored runs in the third on an RBI double by Ryan Castaneda. That is all the Yellowjackets would need as they once-again got strong relief pitching with Christian Garcia going two innings and Jack Barnett closing it out for the save for UWS (2-4), which dropped its previous doubleheader Thursday by one run in each game.
Tyler Carper had a hit, walk, run and RBI to lead the Cougars (0-2).
