The Superior High School baseball team improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Lake Superior Conference with a 9-4 win over Hermantown Tuesday, May 21, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Hermantown, but recent snowfall left its field unplayable.
Joey Barker picked the win in relief for the Spartans, allowing an unearned run on one hit and one walk while striking out seven in six innings.
The Spartans outhit the Hawks 10-4, led by Riley Rehnstrand, who was 3-for-4 with a two-run single in the fifth inning and an RBI single in the sixth. He also scored twice.
Ben Rhodes added a couple of singles and two runs scored; Will Schorr had a pair of RBI groundouts; Barker, Sean McCoshen and Kaden Kimmes had a hit and RBI each; and Austin LeJeune and Jason Samarziya singled
Nolan Ruprecht and Jeb Paczynski both had a hit and RBI for the Hawks. Reese Fish and Ben Siljendahl added RBIs and Rico Rodriguez and Elliot Peterson both singled.
Paczynski suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in six innings. He also struck out four and walked three before Thomas Borash pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
After both teams scored three times in the first inning, Superior took the lead for good with a four-run fifth. The teams traded runs in the sixth inning and the Spartans finished the scoring with Kimmes' RBI single in the seventh.
The Spartans play at Northwestern at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, and host Duluth East at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV defeated Hermantown 12-2. Jason Samarziya started and pitched two innings allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two. Jonny Rhodes pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Ross Rivord pitched one scoreless inning. Carter Kalin had three of the Spartans’ 12 hits, while Ethan Raye and Kaden Kimmes had two hits apiece. Rivord, Mason Stenberg, Max Reed, Robert Olson and Carter Leif had one hit apiece.
