SHS baseball team sweeps Ashland
The Superior High School baseball team defeated the Ashland Oredockers 11-1 and 10-0 Tuesday, May 14, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Both games lasted just five innings.
Conner Fonger was the complete-game winner in the opener, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
The Spartans had 10 hits, led by Ben Rhodes, who tripled, singled and knocked in four runs. Rhodes singled in the first inning, knocked in a run with a ground out in the second, and ended the game early with a bases-loaded triple in the fifth.
Will Schorr also hit an RBI triple and singled; and Riley Rehnstrand had two hits and an RBI.
Ashland’s run came on a second-inning RBI groundout by Braden Stegmann.
David Fender and Rhodes pitched in game two for the Spartans, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
The Spartans had six hits, including Mason Stenberg’s two-run double in the fourth inning. Gunnar Hansen added a two-run double; Jonny Rhodes had an RBI pinch-hit single; and Blake Arnovichand Austin LeJeune hit RBI singles.
Up next for Superior is the Hibbing Wood Bat Tournament. The Spartans play the host Blue Jackets at 7 p.m. Friday.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV improved to 13-2 with wins over 17-0 and 12-4 over Ashland. Jason Samarziya and Jonny Rhodes combined for a no-hitter in the opener. Kaden Kimmes had three of the Spartans’ 12 hits while Rhodes and Ethan Raye had two hits apiece. Samarziya, Kell Piggott, Jake Edwards, Robert Olson and Carter Leif added a hit each. Max Reed started the second game and pitched two innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two. Tucker Johnson and Ross Rivord pitched in relief, allowing a run apiece on three hits while striking out two. The Spartans got two hits from Rivord, Jake Kidd, Reed and Olson. Carter Kalin, Austin Ward and Johnson all had one hit.
