A five-run fourth inning helped the Superior High School baseball team pull away from the Duluth Denfeld Hunters for a 9-1 victory Monday, April 29, at Wade Stadium.

The Spartans outhit the Hunters 12-4 while improving to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Joey Barker’s two-run single highlighted the Spartans’ fourth inning. The remaining three runs came on a double play, a wild pitch and Ben Rhodes' RBI single.

Rhodes finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI; Derek Fender, Riley Rehnstrand and Will Schorr had RBI singles, Conner Fonger and Sean McCoshen had two hits apiece; and Blake Arnovich and Kaden Kimmes singled.

Denfeld’s run came in on Dane Herold’s RBI double in the third inning.

The Hunters (2-5) also got singles from Corey Graves, Logan Jasper and Corey Miller.

Rhodes picked up the win for the Spartans in relief of starter Derek Fender. Rhodes allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out four in 4 ⅓ innings. Derek Fender, who pitched a scoreless first inning and got the first two outs in the second, allowed two hits with a strikeout and two walks. David Fender pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Miller and Erick Gibson pitched for the Hunters, finishing with three walks and three strikeouts.

Superior took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Kimmes singled, moved to third on a  wild pitch and stolen base, and scored on Gunnar Hansen's sacrifice bunt. Rhodes also scored an unearned run.

After Superior’s five-run fourth inning, Hansen walked and scored on Schorr's single sixth inning, and Arnovich singled and scored on David Fender's single in the seventh.

The Spartans will be back at Wade Stadium on Thursday, May 2, to play the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers. Superior will wrap up the week with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday at Menomonie.

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV defeated Duluth Denfeld 9-6 Tuesday, April 30. Kell Piggott started and pitched three innings allowing six runs (two earned) on one hit and six walks while striking out six. Jake Kidd pitched four shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. Max Reed had two of Superior’s six hits, including a double and two RBIs. Austin Ward added two hits while Ross Rivord and Jason Samarziya had a hit apiece. … The SHS JV also defeated Chippewa Falls 22-14 in nine innings in game one of a doubleheader on Friday, April 26. Chippewa Falls was ahead 6-3 after three innings when game two was called due to darkness. Austin LeJeune started game one, going 2 2/3 innings allowing two runs on one hit and six walks while striking out three. Rivord, Jonny Rhodes and Robert Olson pitched in relief. Olson was credited with the win after pitching three scoreless innings to finish the game. The Spartans had 19 hits. Kaden Kimmes had three hits, while Olson, Ethan Raye, LeJeune, Jake Edwards and Reed had two apiece. Tristan Brennen, Piggot, Kidd, Rivord, Rhodes and Samarziya had one hit apiece. Edwards and Piggot pitched in game two. Getting hits were Reed, Piggot, Raye, Kidd and Carter Kalin.
