Spartans stop another opponent

Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Superior High School baseball team remained undefeated with a 7-1 win at Cloquet on Tuesday, April 23.

Superior and Cloquet matched runs in the first inning, but after that it was all Spartans, who improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Derek Fender, Conner Fonger and Joe Barker pitched for Superior, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Spartans had nine hits, led by Ben Rhodes, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Gunnar Hansen added a double and RBI; Barker had a hit and RBI; Riley Rehnstrand had an RBI; and David Fender, Blake Arnovich, Isaac Rios, Sean McCoshen and Jason Samarziya added singles.

For Cloquet, Gavin Rasmussen doubled and singled; Noah Niemi singled twice; and Jake Huhta doubled.

Rhodes led off the game for Superior with a single and eventually scored on Rehnstrand's ground out.

In the Spartans’ three-run fourth inning, Derek Fender singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch; and Rios, who singled, and Will Schorr, who walked, both scored on Rhodes' single.

In the fifth inning Rehnstrand reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on an error; and in the sixth Sean McCoshen walked, Samarziya singled and scored they on Hansen's sac fly and Barker's single, respectively.

The Spartans play a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Chippewa Falls then return to LSC action at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, at Duluth Denfeld.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV defeated Cloquet 17-7 in six innings. Jason Samarziya pitched two innings allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one. Jonny Rhodes, Jake Kidd and Kell Piggot each pitched in relief. The trio allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six. The Spartans had 14 hits. Leading the way were Ross Rivord and Carter Kalin with three hits apiece and Mason Stenberg with two hits. Carter Leif added a run-scoring single while Rhodes, Piggott, Kaden Kimmes, Robert Olson and Ethan Raye added hits.
