Reds share title with West Duluth, Eastview

The Superior Reds, West Duluth Cubs and Eastview Thunder finished tied for first place in the Superior Youth Organization’s American Legion Tournament over the weekend.

All three teams finished with 2-1 records. The final entrant in the event, St. Paul Hamline Red, finished 0-3.

The Reds opened the tournament Friday evening with a 15-4 loss to West Duluth, then rebounded with wins of 15-4 over Eastview and 18-6 over Hamline Red.

The Reds (15-5) host Grand Rapids for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. today (Monday) at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Superior then hosts Proctor at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Morrie Arnovich Field and plays at West Duluth at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Superior will also compete in the Ely Tournament this weekend.

Two of the Blues’ run came in on Hunter Gustafson’s double.

Derek Fender added an RBI single and Wyatt O’Bey singled.

Gustafson, Fender and O’Bey homered in the Reds’ win over the Thunder.

Gustafson finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs; O’Bey also singled and had three RBIs; and Fender added two doubles.

Also for the Reds, Conner Fonger tripled, singled and scored four runs; Trenton Wols had three hits; Dominic D'Auria doubled; Michael LaJoie was 2-for-3 with an RBI; and Judd Erickson was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

O'Bey and Fender shared pitching duties, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts and seven walks.

Trailing 6-0, the Reds took the lead for good over the squad from St. Paul with eight runs in the top of the third inning.

Gustafson, who was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

Also for the Reds, Gunner Johnson doubled and singled twice; Trenton Wols doubled, singled and had three RBIs; Conner Fonger had two hits and two RBIs; LaJoie and O’Bey both doubled, singled and knocked in a run; Fender singled twice; and D’Auria had a RBI single.

Justin Reinkall was the winning pitcher, allowing only one earned run on six hits while striking out nine.
