Reds off to 2-1 start

The Superior Reds American Legion baseball team opened its season with a come-from-behind 9-7 win in eight innings Thursday evening at Taconite, Minn.

The Reds (2-1) followed up with a split of a doubleheader Sunday at Altoona, winning 3-2 and losing 3-2.

Friday’s home game against Cloquet was cancelled due to the Lumberjacks’ late run in Minnesota high school playoffs.

The Reds (2-1) host Hibbing in a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. today at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Superior also hosts Hudson at 6 p.m. Thursday and plays two games at Nisswa, Minn., at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Brandon Wing picked up the complete-game victory in Sunday’s opener, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

He also helped himself on offense with a hit and RBI.

With the Reds trailing 2-1 in the top of sixth inning, Johnson reached on an error, moved to third on LaJoie’s sac bunt and scored on D’Auria’s double, tying the game 2-2.

After D’Auria advanced to third on a wild pitch, he scored the eventual game-winning run on Wing’s ground out to short. Altoona got the out at first, then attempted to throw out D’Auria at the plate, but he was able to slide underneath the tag to give the Reds the lead.

The Reds also got a double and single from Johnson and a single from Isaac Rios.
