The Solon Springs/Northwood Babe Ruth team defeated Hayward Black 14-8 in eight innings in the Heart O’ North League championship game July 23 in Hayward.
Solon Springs/Northwood was the No. 4 seed for the playoffs, which included the top eight teams in the 14-team HON league.
Solon Springs/Northwood opened the playoffs with a 9-4 win over No. 5 Barron at home July 17, then advanced to the championship game with an 11-6 win at No. 3 Rice Lake.
Against No. 1 Hayward Black, Solon Springs/Northwood led 6-2 after five innings and 8-4 after six, but Hayward scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Solon Springs/Northwood bounced back to score six runs in the top of the eighth then held Hayward scoreless in the bottom of the inning to clinch the title.
Statistical leaders for Solon Springs/Northwood during the playoffs were Jared Schultz, 6-for-12 (.500 average) with three runs scored; Tanner Carlson, 8-for-14 (.571) with a double, triple and four runs scored; Abe Ahlberg, 5-for-12 (.417) with three doubles and six runs scored; Dyaln Taggart, 6-for-12 (.500) with four doubles and five runs scored; and Brody Visger, 5-for-9 (.555) with two doubles and four runs.
Pitching leaders were Carlson, two wins, three earned runs with seven strikeouts over eight innings, and Ahlberg, one earned run and eight strikeouts over six innings.
Solon Springs/Northwood ended the season with a record of 8-3.
It is believed to be the first Solon Springs Babe Ruth team to win the HON title since coach Nathan Ahlberg was a member of the team in 1992. Ahlberg is also the head coach at Solon Springs High School and a former St. Scholastica Saint.
Remaining members of the champions are Brandt Larson, Mason Larson, Kaden Corlett, Isaiah Kastern, Tarver Sellwood, Thomas Jarrell, Jesse Lawler and Wyatt Cowger.
The team is coached by Ahlberg and Jason Schultz.
