The Superior Reds finished in second place in the 44th annual Grand Rapids American Legion Baseball Invitational Baseball Tournament on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, at Bob Streetar Field in Grand Rapids.
After compiling a record of 3-1 through round-robin play, the Reds scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Grand Rapids 9-5 in one semifinal, but then lost to Fridley Gold 3-1 in the championship game.
Fridley Gold overcame Princeton’s five-run first inning to win 20-10 in five innings in the other semifinal.
In round-robin play in the Black Pool, the Reds defeated Hibbing twice, Taconite once, and lost to Fridley Gold.
Fridley Gold finished 4-0 in the Black Pool, as did Grand Rapids in the Orange Pool.
In earlier action on Friday, June 14, the Reds split a doubleheader with Grand Rapids, with Superior winning the first game 13-8 and losing game two 12-8.
The Reds host Chippewa Falls at 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Superior then plays at Spooner at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, and in the Fargo tournament June 28-30.
