Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer busted out of a frustrating start with force, scoring six unanswered goals in a 6-1 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference thumping of Northland Saturday, Sept. 11, 2011 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Yellowjackets fell behind in their league opener to a fourth-minute penalty kick from Lee Dennis, but scored their first three goals in a span of 1:45: The first two came from Protus Babaya 19 seconds apart and the third was from Archie Gjerdrum.

UWS poured in three more in the second half to raise its record to 1-3 (1-0 UMAC). Blake Perry had three assists in the game and Alex Paredes made one save. The Yellowjackets meet the Lumberjacks again next Saturday (Sept. 18) in Ashland.

Another split for UWS volleyball

The UWS volleyball team finished the Subway Stinger Classic 2-2 after splitting two five-set marathons on Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

UWS topped Concordia (Minn.) 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-10) before falling 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-5) to Macalester.

In the Concordia win, Maiana Stark had four of her team-best 19 kills in the fifth set. Cassy Teff and Alexie Pryd added 10 kills apiece. Megan Holtz led the Yellowjackets with 22 assists and Jenna Anderson had 22 digs.

Anderson added 27 digs in the Macalester defeat. Pryd was the team kill leader with 15.

UWS (2-6) plays Wisconsin-Stout and Bethel on Saturday, Sept. 18 in St. Paul.
