Senior shortstop Kayla Schultz filled up the stat sheet as Northwood/Solon Springs rolled to a 14-4 victory over Prairie Farm in high school softball Thursday, June 4, in Minong, clinching a share of the Lakeland-East Conference title.
Schultz finished with two doubles, three runs, two walks and four RBIs for NSS (14-1 overall, 9-1 Lakeland-East), which shares the conference title with Cornell/Lake Holcombe.
Annika Patrick added a hit, walk, three runs and two RBIs and Kyra Latvala had two hits and two RBIs for Northwood/Solon Springs, ranked ninth in the Wisconsin Division 4 state rankings. Maddelyn Swanson, Petyon Downs and Bailey Monson each added a hit and two runs apiece.
Emma Bergmann had a triple, double and two runs to lead Prairie Farm (5-7, 4-6).
“Strong performance from our girls,” co-coach Jackson Terry said. “I’m proud of what we've been able to accomplish in the first real year of the co-op together, the vision of our late head coach Paul Vaara hopefully coming together. Proud of these girls and hope more of these nights are ahead of us.”
Northwood/Solon Springs keeps rolling
Freshman Abe Ahlberg scattered four hits over five innings, allowing one run while striking out 11 and only walking one as Northwood/Solon Springs rolled to a 10-1 Lakeland-East victory over Prairie Farm on Thursday, June 3, in Minong.
“It was nice to put up a couple of runs in the first inning and get an early lead,” coach Nate Ahlberg said. “But Prairie Farm held us to only one run over the next three innings, then scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 3-1 after the top of the fourth. We responded with seven runs over the last two innings to put the game out of reach.”
Drake Debeir paced the conference champions by going 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs while fellow senior Collin Krmpotich was 2-for-4 with a double, four runs, three stolen bases and an RBI.
Ahlberg, who upped his pitching record to 4-0, helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with three runs, a stolen base and RBI while freshman Dylan Taggart added a hit, run and stolen base.
“Abe threw well tonight, giving up one run and striking out 11 in his 5 innings. He improved to Northwood/Solon Springs (14-3 overall, 12-0 Lakeland-East, ranked ninth in Wisconsin Division 4, finished its conference schedule with a perfect 12-0 record, earning the No. 1 seed in the regional bracket and a first-round bye next week. NSS will host the winner of Drummond and Mellen in Solon Springs Tuesday, June 15th.
NSS was scheduled to play Friday, June 4, at Ashland in a change from earlier in the week, then Monday, June 7, at Hurley and then Thursday, June 10, at Cameron.

NSS competes at conference meet
Senior Calin Lisson continued his strong first year in track by winning the 200 and 400 meters at the Indianhead Conference championships Tuesday, June 1, in Hurley.
Many personal records were set, including Ben Dickenson in the 3,200 (12:10.23), Logan Henning (12.36/24.99), Bryon Hobshield in the 100 and 200 (12.64/25.82) and Claire Holmstrom in the shot put and discus (24 feet, 3.5 inches/65-10).
The Northwood/Solon Springs girls 1,600 relay team of Allie Nordskog, Ava Burger, Isabel Molina and Nona Thompson finished second in a PR of 5:21.31.
