Wisconsin-Superior rolled to a 14-4 victory in eight innings over Northland before having the tables turned in a 9-5 loss in the rematch Tuesday in a UMAC baseball doubleheader at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Brandon Rolf had three hits, two runs and an RBI and Josh Hukriede added two hits, a walk and three RBIs as the Yellowjackets pounded out 13 hits in the opener. Nick Zezulka chipped in two hits, two runs, two RBIs and a walk while Christian Garcia hit a two-run home run and Mike Rodriguez had a hit, two runs and two walks.
Ryan Rodriguez got the pitching win for UWS, with 11 strikeouts in just six innings while Matt Tappe closed it out with two scoreless innings of relief.
Noah Cross had two home runs to lead Northland in the opener and Adrian Bethel added a solo shot.
Bryce Flanagan got the Yellowjackets off to a great start in the second game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning but it was almost all Northland after that.
Bethel and Zach Ross hit home runs to lead the Lumberjacks (5-20 overall, 3-7 UMAC) while Bethel, Ross, Cross and Jake Schramm all had two RBIs apiece.
Flanagan and Mike Rodriguez each had two hits and two RBIs to lead UWS (13-19, 6-8), which had 11 hits but left 10 men on base.
UWS men take top honors
The UMAC postseason golf awards were announced Tuesday with men’s tournament champion Wisconsin-Superior taking home the UMAC Player of the Year in senior Joey Cummings, 2020 Medalist honors in senior Ryan Peterson and the Coach of the Year in Paul Eberhardt.
Cummings and Peterson are both Duluth East graduates. Joining them on the all-conference team was teammate Sam Albrecht, a junior from Gilbert.
Among women’s all-conference selections was UWS senior Alayna Tulip of Arcadia, Wisconsin. Sophomore teammate Maddie Friedman of Spooner, Wisconsin, earned honorable mention honors.
