Former Northwestern standout Abby Nelson was named the Women's Most Valuable Freshman by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point recently for her performances in both wrestling and pole vaulting.

Nelson, a freshman from Iron River, qualified for nationals in both sports. The week before the track and field national championships, Nelson competed in the national wrestling meet. Then she qualified for the indoor track and field nationals by placing fourth in the WIAC indoor championships with a vault of 11 feet, 9 inches — the fourth-best mark in the indoor pole vault in school history.
