The season ended for the Superior High School baseball team with a 12-11 loss to D.C. Everest in a WIAA Division 1 regional game Tuesday, May 28, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Spartans led 4-1 after two innings, but then fell behind for good with a seven-run third inning by the Evergreens.
DCE increased its lead to 12-5 in the top of the fifth before Superior made things interesting with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the seventh.
David Fender singled with one out in the seventh and scored on Conner Fonger's double.
Ben Rhodes walked and the two moved up on an error, but a line out to centerfield ended the game with the tying run on third base and the winning run on second.
The Spartans outhit the Evergreens 14-13, led by Fonger, who doubled twice and had five RBIs.
Gunnar Hansen was also 3-for-5, including a three-run double and RBI single; Rhodes was 3-for-3 with a triple and RBI single; and Sean McCoshen had an RBI single; and Fender singled twice.
Derek Fender, who took the loss for the Spartans, combined with Mason Stenberg and Joe Barker to strike out two and walk two. Only eight of DCE's runs were earned.
For the Evergreens, Brady Sendelbach was 3-for-5 with two RBIs; Landon Mezei was 3-for-5 with a double and RBI; Cade Siverston and Nolan Hoppe both had a hit and two RBIs; Hunter Gipp doubled and singled; Jackson Miles had a hit and two RBIs; and Owen Latendresse and Tommy Alston doubled.
While the Spartans’ season ends with a record of 16-6, the Evergreens (10-13) played at No. 2 Eau Claire North (19-4) on Thursday, May 30.
