The Superior High School baseball team went 2-0 in the Hibbing Wood Bat Tournament on Friday, May 17, at Nyberg Field.
The Spartans defeated Cloquet 8-0 and Hibbing 12-0 in six innings. Day two of the tournament was rained out.
Derek Fender picked up the complete-game win over Cloquet, tossing a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
The Spartans had 10 hits, led by Will Schorr, who was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Joey Barker was also 2-for-2 with an RBI; Sean McCoshen was 2-for-2 with three RBIs; and Gunnar Hansen was 2-for-4.
Superior scored three times in the fourth inning and five more times in the fifth.
In the fourth, Schorr hit an RBI double and scored on a double steal; and McCoshen singled home Barker, who singled.
The Spartans sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning.
Barker started it with an RBI single; and Schorr and McCoshen hit two-run singles.
Mason Stenberg picked up the win over Hibbing in game two, allowing two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Austin LeJeune pitched the final inning, allowing a walk and striking out.
The Spartans had 12 hits, including three apiece from Riley Rehnstrand and Schorr.
Schorr also doubled and knocked in three runs while Rehnstrand had one RBI and scored twice.
Also for the Spartans, Barker had two hits, including a two-run single and RBI groundout; and Hansen was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Spartans play at Hermantown on Tuesday, May 21, and host Duluth East on Thursday, May 23. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
Superior's game with New Richmond on May 23 has been canceled.
