The Superior High School softball team wrapped up its regular season with a 9-1 win over Duluth East Thursday, May 17, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Spartans didn't know at the time it would be their last game because they still had a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday with Eden Prairie. But with rain in the forecast, those games were called off.
Superior will now take a 20-3 record into the WIAA Division 1 playoffs. Thanks to a No. 2 seed, the Spartans get a bye and will host the winner of No. 7 Chippewa Falls (17-6) and No. 10 Eau Claire Memorial (7-19) at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 23.
The Spartans split with ECM during the season, winning 10-0 and losing 6-5. Superior and Chippewa Falls did not play.
The Spartans had seven hits in their win over East, including a home run, single and two RBIs from Autumn Siers.
Mady Stariha was also 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Olivia Moen was 1-for-2 with two RBIs; Ruby Moore had an RBI single; and Chesie McLaughlin singled.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Moore led off with a walk and scored on a single by Stariha.
It went to 3-0 in the second when Moen was hit by a pitch and scored on Moore's fielder's choice, and Stariha was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
The Spartans blew the game open with a six-run fourth inning, which included Siers' two-run home run; and a two-run single by Moen. MacKenzie Lehto, who walked, also scored on an error, and Moen scored on a wild pitch.
East scored in the fourth inning when Kirstin Cotter singled and scored on Cassie Bergman's double.
Stariha was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Ava White took the loss for East, allowing six earned runs with two strikeouts and five walks.
