Mady Stariha tossed a five-inning perfect game as the Superior High School softball team defeated Duluth Denfeld 10-0 in five innings Tuesday, May 14, at the Wade Stadium softball fields in Duluth.
Stariha’s second perfect game, and third no-hitter of the season, included eight strikeouts and only one ball hit out of the infield - a fifth-inning fly out to centerfield.
The Spartans also clinched the Lake Superior Conference championship with a record of 6-0.
Superior finished with seven hits. Ruby Moore was 2-for-2; Autumn Siers and Hailee Melgeorge had a hit two RBIs apiece; Chesie McLaughlin and Kayleigh Miller had RBI singles; and Madison Sislo singled.
Stariha and McKenzie Lehto also added two RBIs apiece.
The Spartans scored the only run they needed in the top of the first when Siers singled and scored on a Denfeld 1-6-3 double play.
Superior added four runs in the second inning on Moore's RBI single; Siers’ hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded; and McLaughlin's sac fly.
The Spartans added five more runs in the fourth on another bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, Stariha's sac fly, McLaughlin's RBI single; and a bases-loaded walk to Elise DeGraef.
The Spartans (18-3) host Duluth East at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, and host Eden Prairie for two games at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18.
