The Superior High School baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Eau Claire Memorial Saturday, May 11, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Old Abes scored once in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh to win the opener 3-1. The Spartans bounced back to win game two 9-7 and improve to 11-4. ECM is now 7-9.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the opener when Kaden Kimmes singled and scored on Joey Barker's sac fly.
The Old Abes tied it up in the sixth when Andrew Roberts walked and scored on Kaden Kohlhepp's single.
Jack Fentres and Vincent Trapani singled to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Fentres scored on Connor Stoik's single and Trapani stole home.
Chase Bredl was the complete-game winner, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Derek Fender took the loss, allowing three runs in six innings. He allowed six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Mason Stenberg took over for Fender in the seventh inning and struck out three batters.
The Spartans took a 5-1 lead in game two and eventually led 9-4 until the Old Abes made things close with three runs in the top of the seventh.
The Spartans had 12 hits, led by Ben Rhodes, 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Joey Barker had two hits and an RBI; Sean McCoshen had a two-run double; Will Schorr had a two-run single; Stenberg hit a two-run single; Gunnar Hanson single twice; and Riley Rehnstrand had two hits and one RBI.
Superior hosts Ashland in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.
SHS 7, Esko 2
A three-run first inning propelled Superior past Esko Thursday, May 9, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The game was originally scheduled to be played as part of the Ron Orlandi Classic in early April.
The Spartans’ early scoring spree included Blake Arnovich’s RBI single and McCoshen’s two-run double.
Hansen, Rhodes, David Fender and Austin LeJeune combined in the win, allowing eight hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
After Esko scored runs in the second and third innings, Superior made it 4-2 in the bottom of the third when Barker singled, stole second and scored on an error off the bat of Schorr.
The Spartans finished the scoring with a three-run fourth inning. Rehnstrand singled to score Fender, then scored himself on Barker's ground out; and Hansen, who singled, scored on an error off the bat of Arnovich.
McCoshen finished with two hits and two RBIs; Barker also doubled, singled and knocked in a run; and Rehnstrand, Hansen and Arnovich had one hit each.
Mason Vinje took the loss for Esko, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings.
James LaGarde and Jaustin Piepho had two hits each for Esko.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV (10-1) defeated Esko 9-8. Jonny Rhodes started for the Spartans, pitching four innings, allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout. Ross Rivord pitched one inning of relief and Kell Piggott pitched the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and three strikeouts. Rivord had two hits and Piggott, Kaden Kimmes, Ethan Raye, Jake Edwards and Mason Stenberg had a hit each. .... The SHS JV also split a doubleheader with ECM, losing 3-2 in 9 innings and winning 5-1. LeJeuneand Robert Olson pitched in the opener, allowing 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Jason Samarziya had two hits while LeJeune, Ross Rivord, Austin Ward, Tucker Johnson and Carter Kalin had one apiece. Edwards started game two, allowing one run on three hits and four walks while striking out seven. Jake Kidd pitched three scoreless innings of relief. The Spartans got on hit apiece from Olson, Rivord, Kidd, Tristan Brennen, Carter Leif and Max Reed.
