The Bethany Lutheran Vikings won it second straight UMAC baseball tournament championship with a 7-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets Saturday, May 11, at Wade Stadium in Duluth.
The Vikings (22-16) who went 3-0 in the UMAC tournament, outscored their opponents 24-10, including UWS 4-2 in Friday’s semifinal game.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the title game when Conner Side scored on Jake LaBerge’s single.
It went to 4-0 in the fourth on a two-run triple by Jared Gesell, who then scored on a passed ball.
The Yellowjackets got one run back in the fifth when Bryce Flanagen reached on an error and scored on Nick Fredrickson’s single to right center.
The Vikings scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Ross Beumer, Gessel scored on a wild pitch and LaBerge’s RBI groundout.
Superior’s Braeden Barr finished the scoring with an eighth-inning home run.
Barr finished with two hits, while Cory Albertson, Brandon Rolf and Colin Welch added singles.
Logan Nissen earned the win in relief of Adam Fjerstad. Nissen pitched 4.2 innings allowing just one run and striking out two. Fjerstad struck out four and surrendered three hits in the first 4.1 innings.
Beumer led Vikings at the plate going 3-for-4, while Schuster, Side and LaBerge each had a pair of hits.
The Yellowjackets end their season at 18-22.
UWS 6, Northwestern 3
UWS scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Northwestern in the semifinals Friday night.
Trailing 3-2 after eight innings, Jordan Berrios and Alex Osness walked and scored on singles by Albertson and Mike Rodriguez for a 4-3 lead.
UWS added to its lead with a two-run single by Brandon Rolf.
Rolf finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Albertson, Barr, Travis Miller and Matthew Boyde added two hits apiece. One of Miller's hits was a double.
Zach Bennett (2-1) picked up the win in relief of Mikey Piletich, who pitched the first six innings. The two allowed nine hits with one strikeout and three walks.
BL 4, UWS 2
Trailing the Vikings 4-0, UWS cut the lead in half when Miller and Rolf scored on Osness' two-run double in the sixth inning. Osness led for the 'Jackets with two hits.
UWS 4, Crown 1
Crown got on the board first after back-to-back singles in the top of the third in Thursday’s play-in game and Bailey Sarto scored on an error.
The Yellowjackets tied it up in the fourth when Osness doubled and scored on Albertson’s single.
The Yellowjackets’ lead went to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Matthew Boyde and Rolf, then added added another run in the eighth on another RBI from Rolf.
UWS got a complete-game pitching effort from Auggie Anderson, who surrendered six hits and no earned runs with nine strikeouts.
The Yellowjackets were led by Albertson, 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
UWS 6, CSS 3
The Yellowjackets, who were swept by the Saints during the regular season, turned things around on Friday behind a solid pitching effort from Barr, who tossed an eight-hitter with six strikeouts.
Barr (3-2), a senior from San Diego, Calif., logged 138 pitches, walked three and allowed only two earned runs. His ERA coming into the contest was 6.82. Barr also had two hits at the plate, while Albertson set the tone early with a two-run home run in the top of the first.
The Yellowjackets started the game with a lead-off single from Berrios and Albertson’s home run two batters later.
The 'Jackets added two more base runners but the Saints managed to get out of the jam down just two before cutting the lead in half in the bottom half on an RBI sacrifice from Conor Wollenzien.
The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 5-1 in the fourth. UWS got lead-off singles from Miller and Rolf before Bryce Flanagan was walked to load the bases. Miller and Rolf scored on an error and Flanagan came in on a sac fly from Osness.
Wollenzien’s second RBI of the game scored Brad Fossum in the bottom of the fifth, but the Yellowjackets, however, created more breathing room adding a run in the seventh on a Boyde single.
The Saints got one more run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI from Joey Zwak.
The Yellowjackets handed the Saints their first-ever opening game loss in UMAC tournament history.
Fossum had two hits, two walks and two runs to lead St. Scholastica, while Zwak added two hits and an RBI.
