The Superior High School baseball team spotted Proctor a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but then scored the next six for a 6-1 Lake Superior Conference win Tuesday, May 7, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Derek Fender (2-0) picked up the win for the Spartans, allowing an unearned run and one hits over four innings. He also struck out four before Mason Stenberg took over and allowed one hit with five strikeouts over the final three innings.
Riley Rehnstrand led the Spartans at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Gunnar Hanson and Will Schorr both had a hit and RBI; Ben Rhodes knocked in a run; and Austin Hunker, Blake Arnovich, Sean McCoshen and Kaden Kimmes added singles.
Cole Fugere took the loss for Proctor, allowing six hits with two strikeouts and five walks in five innings.
Tanner Olson had an RBI triple and Cole Johnson singles for the Rails.
Superior (9-3, 3-1 LSC) will host Esko in a make-up game at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, May 9. The game was originally scheduled to be played in the Ron Orlandi Tournament, which was rained out.
The Spartans will host doubleheaders with Eau Claire Memorial at noon Saturday, May 11, and Ashland at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14.
SPARTAN SPIN: Hansen leads the Spartans with a .424 batting average, 14 hits and three doubles. Rehnstrand has a team-high 12 RBIs, and Rhodes leads the team with 12 runs. … The Spartan JV defeated Proctor 15-2 in five innings. Jason Samarziya pitched the first three innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits and two walks while striking out four. Kell Piggott and Tucker Johnson each pitched one inning of relief. Piggott also had two of Superior’s seven hits, while Carter Kalin had a double and three RBIs; and Samarziya, Jonny Rhodes, Jake Edwards and Austin Ward had a hit apiece.
