The Superior High School baseball team tasted defeated for just the second time this season with an 11-1, five-inning loss to Duluth Marshall Thursday, May 2, at Wade Stadium.
The Spartans’ run came in the fifth inning as Jason Samarziya led off with a single and scored on Ben Rhodes’ two-out single.
The loss drops Superior to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Lake Superior Conference.
Marshall, 7-1 and 3-0 in the LSC, was led by Charlie Kleinschmidt, 3-for-3 with a triple, double and three RBIs; and Peter Hansen, 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Carter Sullivan was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and a run over five innings.
Joe Barker, Mason Stenberg, David Fender and Austin LeJeune pitched for the Spartans, allowing 10 hits with four strikeouts and five walks.
The Spartans will play a doubleheader at Menomonie at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Superior then hosts Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, and Eau Claire Memorial for two games at noon Saturday, May 11.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV defeated Duluth Marshall 10-3. Max Reed, Jonny Rhodes and Tucker Johnson pitched for the Spartans, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Kell Piggott had two doubles while Ethan Raye had a double and single. Also getting hits were Reed, Johnson, Rhodes, Jake Edwards and Jake Kidd.
