Abigail Nelson, a senior at Northwestern High School, finished in third place in the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation High School Women’s Folkstyle State Championships Sunday, March 3, in the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.

Nelson finished third out of 11 girls in the 106-pound weight class.

Nelson lost her first match to Caitlyn Kelly from Florence (7-1). Kelly went on to win the tournament with a win over Ashland’s Anna Danielson in the championship match.

Nelson then won by major decision over Raquel Rojano, Milwaukee Ronald Reagan (12-2), and Tracey Kessler, Parker Viking (12-4); pinned Emily Tess from Sun Prairie in 1:03; and pinned Ripon’s Lily Alderson in 1:00 in the third-place match.

“Abby wrestled really well,” Coach Bruce Nelson said. “They do not seed at the girls state tournament so the top two girls at 106  pounds ended up being on the same side of the bracket.”
