Cole Danielson’s goal 4:19 into the second overtime gave the Hudson Raiders a 2-1 victory over the Superior High School boys hockey team in WIAA sectional final Saturday, Feb. 23, at Wessman Arena.

Hudson (15-9-1) will attempt to win its third straight state championship beginning Thursday, Feb. 28, in Madison, while Superior, which defeated the Raiders twice during the regular season (3-1 and 3-2 in OT), sees its season end at 18-7.

“They were better team than us - that’s the bottom line,” SHS coach Jason Kalin said. “We just didn’t play well. We talked before the game about keeping it simple and not making mistakes at the blueline, but we had too many turnovers and that what cost us.”

Senior goaltender Dayton Podvin played well for the Spartans, stopping 39 of 41 shots, including 15 in a scoreless first period. Alex Cohen had 20 saves for Hudson.

“Their goalie played really well, just exceptional,” Hudson coach Brooks Lockwood said. “We were ready to play. We’ve had a lot of close games against some good teams so we knew we had the team. It just came down to if we had the heart and wanted to win the battles.”

The Raiders already had a shot advantage of 14-4 when the Spartans were called for back-to-back penalties and spent most of the final 3:15 of the first period shorthanded.

Podvin was on his game early on, including saves on a shot and rebound three minutes into the game, then a pair of big-glove saves - the second on a shot from the slot after a behind-the net pass to an open Hudson player.

“Podi played a great game and I thought our defense played really well,” Kalin said.

A couple of minutes after killing off the final 1:18 of a penalty at the start of the second period, Superior seemed to score the game’s first goal, but the play was blown dead before the puck crossed the goalline.

Less than a minute later, Superior went on a 5-on-3 power play for 1:14.

Hudson killed off the first penalty, but Superior cashed in on the second when Cayden Laurvick took an across-the-crease pass from Grant Sorensen and ripped a one-timer behind Cohen from the left circle. Max Curtis also assisted on Laurvick’s team-leading 27th goal at 6:24.

Each team then took turns hitting posts, including T.J. Sitek for the Spartans.

Hudson tied it up with 8:36 remaining in the third period when Bennett Schrank put a wrist shot over Podvin’s right shoulder from the right circle.

Hudson kept up the pressure, putting a shot off the post and forcing Podvin to make a stop on Zach Kochendorfer’s shot from just outside the crease with around six minutes remaining.

The Raiders outshot the Spartans 6-2 in the first overtime then scored the game-winner when Danielson redirected a centering pass from Dylan Carr past Podvin on the first shot in the second OT.

“A tough line change, and some guys not being aware on the last goal, that’s just what it came down,” Kalin said.

Danielson, who also assisted on Schrank’s goal, is Hudson’s leading scorer with 21 goals and 26 assists.

“Cole’s always been there for us,” Lockwood said. “He’s won more games in our program’s history, he’s been state champ twice and a runner-up at state once.”

Seniors playing in their final games for the Spartans were Laurvick, Jakob Holmlund, Sorensen, Ian Johnson, Drew DeBruyne, Taylor Burger, James Bronson, Trevor Dalbec, Derrick Mattson, Curtis and Podvin.

“This was a great bunch of kids,” Kalin said. “I hate to have it end this way for them and it’s going to be sad to say goodbye to them, from a hockey standpoint.”
