The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team took a 1-0 lead in its WIAC semifinal series with UW-Eau Claire with a 2-0 victory Friday, Feb. 22, at the Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire.
Troy MacTavish overcame an injury and a 10-minute misconduct to score what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a power play with 2:39 remaining in the second period.
Former Superior Spartan Daniel Litschke sealed the victory with a breakaway goal with 1:17 remaining in the third period.
Game two of the series is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. UWS will advance to the WIAC finals with a win or tie.
Oscar Svensson picked up his first collegiate shutout with a career-high 51 saves for UWS (9-13-3). Zach Dyment had 29 saves for UWEC (18-5-2).

Callie Hoff notched a hat trick, including two power-play goals, as UW-River Falls defeated UWS 5-2 and swept the WIAC semifinal series and end the Yellowjackets’ season.
After Amber Heidenreich gave UWS (7-18-2) a 1-0 lead in the first period, Hoff scored for the 22nd time this season and was followed up 17 seconds later by Kathryn Larson for a 2-1 River Falls lead after one period.
Jenna Curtis evened the score at 2-2 early in the second, but Hoff secured the win for regular-season champion River Falls (23-4) with a pair of second-period goals.
Reilly Springman closed the scoring on a power play in the final 1:43.
McKenzie Whalen stopped made 29 saves for UWS; Sami Miller made 17 saves for River Falls.
UWRF also won 4-1 Friday, Feb. 22.
Erin Olson scored twice for the Falcons, who built a 4-0 lead before Amber Heidenreich scored for UWS with 3:30 left in the second period.
Catherine Johnson had 29 saves for UWS and Sami Miller stopped eight shots for UWRF.
Game two of the series is at 2:05 p.m. Saturday.
