The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s and women’s basketball teams swept a UMAC doubleheader from Martin Luther on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium, while the men’s and women’s hockey teams went a combined 1-3 on the weekend.

 

Men’s hoops

Montroy Scott scored 11 of his game-high 28 points after regulation as the Yellowjackets defeated Martin Luther 74-69 in a double-overtime.

Carter Brown's 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in the first OT forged a 61-61 tie for the Yellowjackets (6-14 overall, 4-7 UMAC), won notched their fourth win in the last five games.

Scott added 11 rebounds for a double-double, while teammate Mac Reykdal totaled 18 points and John Pioro added 13.

UWS hosts St. Scholastica at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1.

Men’s hockey

UWS picked up its third straight victory of the season, and won for the first time in the WIAC, with a 3-2 victory over UW-Stout Friday night at the Fanetti Community Center in Menomonie.

The Yellowjackets had their win streak stopped a day later with a 4-2 loss at UW-Eau Claire.

UWS built a 3-0 lead over the Blue Devils on Friday on a pair of goals by Troy York and a breakaway goal by Levi Cudmore.

Oscar Svennson picked up his third straight win in goal for Superior with 35 saves.

Arturas Laukatis and Mathias Ahman scored goals and Tommi Ahlgren had 24 saves for Stout (13-7-1, 0-3-1).

UWS (7-12-2, 1-2-1 WIAC) took a 1-0 lead Saturday on Coltyn Bates’ first-period tally, but the Blugolds (18-3-2, 4-1-1) scored the next three goals for their seventh win in the past eight games.

Will Blake also scored for UWS late in the third, before Jake Bresser’s empty-netter sealed it for Eau Claire.

UWS hosts UW-River Fall on Friday, Feb. 1, and plays at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Feb. 2. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Women’s hockey

UWS lost to UW-River Falls 4-2 on Friday at Wessman Arena and 2-1 on Saturday at River Falls.

On Friday, UWRF’s Hailey Herdine and UWS’ Tessa Jorde scored first-period goals before Jessie Anderson and Haley Nielsen gave River Falls a two-goal advantage with goals in the final 3:01 of the second. Nielsen’s power-play goal came just before the horn sounded.

Jenna Curtis cut the deficit is half for the Yellowjackets at 1:56 of the third period before Abigail Stowe restored the two-goal lead at 6:30.

UWS goalie McKenzie Whalen totaled 31 saves in defeat.

The Falcons remained undefeated and the Spartans remained winless in the WIAC after Saturday’s game.

Alyson Niebur and Madi Nolan tallied for first-place River Falls (19-2, 7-0 WIAC).

Molly Shelton scored for UWS (7-15-1, 0-7-1) and McKenzie Whalen stopped 39 shots.

NOTES: UWRF sophomore Sam Young had three shots on goal Friday and four shots on goal and won 5-of-9 faceoffs Saturday. On the season, the sophomore from Superior has one goal and nine assists.
