The Superior High School boys hockey team started strong, but the Cloquet Lumberjacks finished stronger with a 7-3 victory Thursday, Jan. 24, at Wessman Arena.
The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the opening 5:34 of the first period, and eventually took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but the Lumberjacks scored six unanswered goals in the final period, including four in the opening 3:13.
CEC sealed the victory with an empty-netter to improve to 10-9 overall and 3-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.
The Spartans (15-4, 3-1) got off to a great start as Gunnar Hansen scored at 2:48 with help from Cayden Laurvick, who then scored when his shot went in off the back of CEC goaltender Owen Carlson.
It went to 3-0 less than a minute later when Ian Johnson scored after nifty passes from Taylor Burger and Trevor Dalbec.
The Lumberjacks got one of the goals back on Aaron Moore’s unassisted goal with 2:10 left in the opening period.
Four of CEC’s goals were scored by Gavin Rasmussen. Drake Nordine and Jon Baker also scored for the Lumberjacks, who got 24 saves from Carlson and Wyatt Senich.
Dayton Podvin had 27 saves for the Spartans, who host New Richmond at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
SPARTAN SPIN: Superior is now Superior is 22-45-4 all-time against CEC. The Spartans snapped a five-game losing streak to the Lumberjacks with a 5-2 win last season on Dec. 12, 2017. CEC got back at the Spartans with a 4-2 win on Jan. 25, 2018, in Cloquet. … Tuesday is also Superior Youth Hockey Night with all Superior youth hockey players getting in free to the game and skating with the Spartans after the game. There will also be a mini-mite jamboree between the first and second periods. … The 23rd annual Spartan Hockey Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, Feb. 3 in the SHS cafeteria. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Children three and under are free.
