The Superior High School wrestling team picked up five wins in a 51-25 loss at Ladysmith on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Superior’s Wyatt Johnson (106 pounds) defeated Elijah Pearson 3-0; Jackson Karren (145) won a 9-0 major decision over Caiden Engel; and Caden Stone (152) pinned Ryan Vollendorf.

Brady Herbst (170) and Darrin Lowney (220) also won by forfeit.

“It was a fun night,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “I challenged the guys to take step up tonight and just really compete and that they did. Yes, we got beat by a better team, but we did battle and represent the Spartans with a lot of heart and pride. I’m so proud of these guys.”

The Spartans wrestle Chetek in the Heart O’ North Conference Super Duals at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Hayward.

The Spartans had two meets last week, finishing third at Eau Claire North on Thursday, Jan., 24, and ninth in the Rice Lake Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Superior finished with 110.01 points at ECN, led by Reese Deyo, who finished third with an all-around score of 30.925. She was also second on vault (8.5 points) and fourth on beam (8.3).

In JV action, Novalee Flores was second on the bars with a score of 4.6.

The Spartans finished with their highest score of the season with 117.875 points at Rice Lake.

Seven Spartans set personal records for the season.

Setting new PRs on the vault were Deyo (8.70), Mollie Rossing (8.30), Flores (8.20), Payton Rusk (8.10), and Paige Rusk (8.00).

Kylie Benesch set her PR on the beam with a score of 7.70; and Morgan Evans’ PR came on floor with a score of 7.40.

The Spartans’ home meet with Eau Claire North on Jan. 24, has been changed to Feb. 8.


Girls hockey

Freshman Keely Morehouse scored her first goal for the Spartans in an 8-1 loss to the Eau Claire Area Stars on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.

Presley Beron finished with 24 saves for the Spartans (2-15-2), who play at Duluth at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22.
