The Superior High School wrestling team tuned up for its own Spartan Classic with a 54-27 loss to the Ashland Oredockers Thursday, Jan. 3, in Ashland.

“Ashland has a nice team,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “Our guys wrestled hard and keep making progress. Sometimes the progress is hard to see but they are taking a lot of little steps each week and seem encouraged by their progress. I am proud of them.”

The Spartans had five wins at Ashland, including a pin by Caden Stone (152 pounds), who improved to 20-2 on the season.

Brahden Long returned to action with a pin at 285, and the Johnson brothers, Wyatt (113) and Tucker (120), won by pins.

Patrick Kerr was placed in the varsity lineup and picked up Superior’s fifth win with a 7-6 decision over Eli Schue at 160 pounds.

“We had some good performances, including from the Johnson brothers (Wyatt and Tucker), who keep coming up with nice pins for us,” Coleman said. “PJ Kerr also had a hard-fought win that came right down to the end and it was nice to see Brahden in the line-up again. He has been battling a knee injury fo the last couple years, but now is back in action extending his record to 5-2.”

In JV action, Luke Pearsons and Darrin Lowney won by pin.

Twelve teams will compete in the 36th annual Spartan Classic, which begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5.

Expected to be in action Saturday are Ashland, Bayfield, Chequamegon, Cloquet, Eau Claire Memorial, Grand Rapids, Ladysmith, Northwestern, Proctor, Shell Lake and Virginia.
