Abigail Nelson, a senior from Northwestern High School, finished in first place in the Badger State Wrestling Invitational (Girls Division) on Dec. 22 at the Alliant Center in Madison.

The event was hosted by Stoughton High School.

Nelson, who wrestled among 11 other girls in the 106-pound weight class, won three preliminary matches before winning a 23-10 major decision over Ripon’s Lili Alderson in the championship match.

“Abby's side of the bracket was really tough,” said Bruce Nelson, Abigail’s father and coach. “Three of the top four girls from last year's state meet were on her side of the bracket, including Raquel Rojano, from Milwaukee Ronald Reagan High School, whom Abby defeated 5-3 in last year’s state title match, and Baraboo’s Alexis Winecke, who placed third.”

Nelson opened by pinning Holmen’s Jasmine Gabbard in 2:35; defeated Rojano 7-3; then won a 12-3 major decision over Winecke for a berth in the championship match against Alderson.

“Abby wrestled really well considering she was battling a cold and was not feeling well,” Bruce Nelson said. “She dominated and was in control in all four of her matches. She really put on a takedown clinic with 20 takedowns in her four matches.”
