Northwestern High School’s McKenzie Tuura and Claire Jarman and Lita Lind were named to the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin Academic All-State team for the 2018 girls golf season.

Lind, a senior, and Jarman, a sophomore, received a designation of “High Honors,” while Tuura, a sophomore, received a designation of “Honors.”

Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25, participate in at least 75 percent of their team’s varsity matches and are at least a sophomore in high school.

The coaches association announced that 319 girls from 96 high schools were honored this year for maintaining high academic standards in the classroom while competing in varsity golf. The average cumulative GPA of this year’s honorees is 3.794.

An academic ‘Team’ award honoring high school teams with the highest cumulative GPA is also be acknowledged in March.

 

Volleyball

The Tigers’ season ended with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-12) loss in a WIAA Division 2 regional match Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Ellsworth.

“Ellsworth is a tough team,” NHS coach Charlie Hessel said. “They are very aggressive in all aspects of the game and were just too much to handle.”

The Tigers were led by Karsyn Jones, five kills; Brooke Ogren, four kills; Tayva Plasch, seven assists; and Madisyn Rossmann, six assists.

Seniors playing in their final match for the Tigers were Madisyn Rossmann, Kasha Hughlett, Myranda Breezee, Lexi Sletten, Hope Nordrum and Abby Bottolfson.

Northwestern finished the season 4-32 overall and 1-13 in the Heart O’ North Conference.



Cross-country

The Tigers will run in the WIAA Division 2 sectional meet Saturday, Oct. 20, at St. Croix Central High School in Hammond, Wis.

The boys race is at 11 a.m., followed by the girls at 11:45 a.m.

The first two teams and first five individuals who are not members of a qualifying team, will advance to the state meet at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Oct. 27.
