The Northwestern High School girls golf team has advanced to the WIAA Division 2 State Golf Championships, which will take place Monday, Oct. 8, and Tuesday, Oct. 9, at University Ridge in Madison.

Tiger junior Kiernan Smith shared medalist honors with Hayward’s Emily Neff. Both golfers finished with 78s.

Smith was eventually crowned the sectional champion when her par beat out Neff’s bogie on the first playoff hole.

Smith trailed Neff 37-40 after nine holes, but turned things around with a 38 on the back nine, which included seven 4s; a 3 on No. 14; and a 7 on No. 15.

Neff carded 41 on the back nine.

As a team, the Tigers finish in second place with a score of 392, eight strokes behind Hayward’s winning score of 384.

Also for the Tigers, Chloe Larson finished in 10th place with a 96; Lita Lind was 26th at 108; and MacKenzie Tuura was 29th at 110. Claire Jarman also carded a non-counting 134.

TIGER TALES: Northwestern advanced to state two other times as a team, finishing fourth in 2005 and 13th in 2002. … Smith was also Northwestern’s low golfer at last year’s WIAA Division 2 sectional tournament, finishing in 11th place with a 93. … Golf begins both days at state at 8:50 a.m.

Superior Spartans

The season came to an end for Superior High School's Lauren Raboin, who carded a 99 at the WIAA Division 1 sectional golf tournament Monday, Oct. 1, at New Richmond Golf Course.

Raboin, a senior, carded a 43 over the final nine holes, which was 13 strokes better than her 56 on the first nine.
