Isaac Rios led the Superior High School baseball team to an 11-3 win over Duluth Denfeld Hunters Monday evening at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The junior right fielder was 3-for-3 with six RBIs and three runs scored. His stats included an inside-the-park grand slam, a two-run triple and a single.
The Spartans also got two hits from Mason Moen; an RBI single and sac fly RBI from Gunnar Hansen; a single and RBI from Derek Fender; and RBIs from Dominic D’Auria, Will Schorr and Devin Samarzia.
Samarzia’s RBI came on a suicide squeeze bunt that scored Rios after his triple.
Denfeld took a 3-0 lead over the Spartans in the top of the third inning.
Superior got one run back in the bottom of the third then took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning.
Conner Fonger, Drake Samarzia, Fender and Brandon Wing pitched for Superior. Combined they allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. All three of Denfeld’s runs were unearned.
Logan Jasper had an RBI single for Denfeld.
SPARTAN SPIN: Superior will be the visiting team against East. … The Spartan JV also won 8-2. Austin LeJeune started and pitched four innings, allowing one run on no hits with four walks while striking out nine. Max Reed and Sean McCoshen combined to pitch the final three innings. The Spartans had five hits, one each by Riley Rehnstrand, Jason Samarziya, Reed, Kaden Kimmes and Carter Fonger.
East 16, Superior 11
The Spartans fall to 9-2 on the season with a 16-11 loss to the Duluth East Greyhounds at home on Tuesday.
Errors were the difference in the high-scoring affair as Superior booted the ball 10 times, which led to 10 unearned runs for East.
Ben Rhodes, Judd Erickson, Moen and Spencer Udeen pitched for Superior, allowing 12 hits with nine strikeouts and six walks.
The Spartans had eight hits, including a two-run single and bases-loaded walk by Rios.
Udeen and Hansen added two-run singles; Dominic D’Auria had an RBI double; Will Schorr had an RBI single; Moen chipped in with a single and RBI groundout; and Drake and Devin Samarzia singled.
East's Brendan Baker was 3-for-5 with two doubles and seven RBIs and Kyle Doup was 3-for-3 with four RBIs for East.
The Spartans look to get back on track with a home conference game against defending section 7AA champion Duluth Marshall at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Superior will then host Menomonie at 10 a.m. Saturday.
