The Superior-Douglas County Family YMCA Whalers swim team recently completed its 2017-18 season at the North Central YMCA Regional Championship held in Des Moines, Iowa.

Other highlights from this season included 24 new team records, a third-place team finish (out of 19 teams) at the Minnesota YMCA League State Championships, and one state championship relay.

The state championship was by the foursome of Marc Pagnucci, Jonas Peterson, Dane Bird and Levi Raisanen, who teamed up to win the 8-and-under boys 100 freestyle relay.

The Superior foursome finished with a time of 1:17.14, almost four seconds ahead of Brainerd’s second-place time of 1:23.79.

As a team, the Whalers finished in third place with 1,639 points. The Southdale YMCA Sharks finished first with 3,018 points, and the Brainerd Dolphins were third, 2,899.

The Whaler boys and girls also finished in fourth place. The Southdale Sharks won both team titles.

The Superior YMCA Whalers Swim Team has nearly 150 swimmers with girls and boys ages 5-18. There are two swim seasons: one summer session from the end of June to the first week of August, and the main competitive season from Oct.-Feb.
