’Jackets, Brown best the Blugolds

Jed Carlson / The puck bounces off the post behind University of Wisconsin-Superior goalie, Sky Brown (35), in the third period of the Yellowjackets victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as former Superior Spartan, and current Blugold forward, Emma Peterson (8) gets in on the action in front of the net.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team held on for a 3-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire Friday night at Wessman Arena.

With the Yellowjackets leading 3-0 after two periods, things got interesting when the Blugolds’ Courtney Wittig and Elizabeth Bauer scored 49 seconds apart to make it a one-goal game with 5:33 remaining.

UWS went on a power play with 3:49 left, but after failing to take advantage with the extra skater, it was UWEC’s turn on the power play for the final 1:24.

Yellowjacket goaltender Sky Brown came up with a save with 42.7 seconds remaining, UWS iced the puck with 18 seconds left, and the ’Jackets eventually held onto the puck behind the net to kill off the final seconds.

“Sky Brown played out of her head,” UWS coach Dan Laughlin said. “Eau Claire banged her around a bit, but Sky’s tough as nails and she won the game for us.

In the last five minutes, when we were on our heels, she was on her toes.”

Brown finished with 28 saves for UWS and Anna Veazey stopped 20 shots for UWEC.

Despite getting outshot 11-8 in the opening period, the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Superior’s first goal came at 3:37 when Amanda Sergent stole the puck just inside the blue line, skated in a couple of strides before taking a shot that went in off Veazey’s glove.

Fifty-seconds after killing off a Celina Clark holding penalty, it went to 2-0 when Kaleigh Martinson got behind the Blugold defense and beat Veazey low on the right side. Molly Shelton assisted on Martinson’s third goal of the season.

“The last couple of games we’ve had bad first periods so the emphasis for this game was to start big right away and we did,” Laughlin said. “That was the best period of hockey we played all year.”

UWS took a 3-0 lead 3:37 into the second period on Mikayla Goodin’s fifth goal of the season.

The power-play goal started with the Yellowjackets forcing a turnover in the offensive zone, which led to Martinson finding Goodin alone in the left circle, where she scored on a high wrist shot.

It nearly went to 4-0 a minute later when Martinson blocked a shot, won the race for the loose puck, but hit the right post on a breakaway.

The Yellowjackets maintained their 3-0 lead throughout the rest of the second period by killing off four straight penalties.

“In the second period we relied on our penalty kill,” Laughlin said. “We watched a lot of film with that and kind of knew what they were going to do, so that helped.

“Again, the girls really sacrificed their bodies tonight. We blocked a lot of shots and we had three girls that were injured but they all played, so that showed a lot about their heart. The whole team showed their heart.”

Brown also made two big saves midway through the third period when she smothered the puck after former Superior Spartan Emma Peterson tried stuffing home a rebound.

Brown stopped Peterson again just over two minutes later on a back-hander.

Peterson eventually picked up a point when she assisted on Bauer’s goal.

Playing with injuries for UWS were Goodin, Sergent and Emily Heid.

“We don’t play for eight days so we got some time off to get healthy,” Laughlin said.

UWS plays at UW-Stevens Point at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

’JACKET JOTTING: UWS used its timeout with 9:18 left in the second period. … UWS had penalties and was 1-of-2 on the power play. … UWEC had five penalties and was 0-for-9 with the extra skater.
