Pipers power past Yellowjackets
The Hamline Pipers powered past the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team with a 5-2 victory Tuesday night at Wessman Arena.
The Pipers took a 3-0 lead early in the second period then added a pair of third-period power-play goals to improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Yellowjackets, who got goals from Jenna Curtis and Kaleigh Martinson, fall to 3-2.
“Tonight just goes to show you have to be ready to play every night,” UWS coach Dan Laughlin said. “If you take a period off and you dig yourself a hole, it’s hard to get back into the game.
“Hopefully we learned from it and know that we have to compete on every shift.”
After killing off a pair of UWS power-plays, Hamline took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period thanks to a pair of back-handed goals midway through the first period.
Becca Zarembinski got behind the UWS defense, took a lead pass from Sarah Bobrowski and beat UWS goaltender Sky Brown at 9:35 and then Bobrowski weaved her way through the UWS defense and slipped the puck past Brown at 11:56.
Each team scored one goal in the second period and each team attempted 12 shots.
The Pipers made it a 3-0 game 2:26 into the second period when Taylor Ramthun’s shot from the right points bounced off a player and past Brown.
UWS got within 3-1 on Curtis’ first collegiate goal, which came nine seconds into a Bre Simon hooking penalty. Maggie Cragg and Molly Shelton assisted on the goal 4:45 into the second period.
Leah Schwartzman and Dani Perry scored on power plays to up Hamline’s lead to 5-1.
Kaleigh Martinson’s second goal of the season completed the scoring with 3:29 remaining.
Brown finished with 33 saves for UWS and Mckenna Hulslander stopped 29 shots for Hamline.
The Yellowjackets played without leading scorer Mikayla Goodin (four goals), who is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
“Missing her hurts,” Laughlin said. “That’s a big missing part of our lineup, so the seniors, and other players, are going to have to step up.”
UWS begins WIAC play Friday by hosting UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
Former Superior Spartan Emma Peterson has a goal and an assist in two games for the Blugolds (2-0-1).
