O’Brien picks up weekly honors
North Dakota State University women’s soccer junior midfielder Malley O’Brien was named The Summit League Offensive Player of the Week for her performance on the pitch the week of Oct. 2-8. It’s her first career Summit League Player of the Week honor.
O’Brien, a former Superior Spartan, netted two goals and dished out an assist to help NDSU defeat Oral Roberts and Omaha at home in a pair of Summit League women’s soccer matches.
In the Bison’s thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Oral Roberts Friday, she scored both NDSU goals, including the game-winner in the 104th-minute of extra time.
On Sunday, in North Dakota State’s 3-2 win over Omaha, O’Brien dished out an assist on Mariah Haberle’s goal in the 71st-minute.
For the week, she tallied five shots — all on goal — for a perfect 1.000 shots on goal percentage.
O’Brien also leads the Bison in scoring on the season with four goals and one assist for nine points. She has attempted a team-high 23 shots (along with Haberle), including 11 on goal; and now has two-winning goals.
North Dakota State is scheduled to travel to Macomb, Ill., Friday, Oct. 13, for a league match at Western Illinois.
MALLEY MEMOS: After appearing in eight matches with the Wisconsin Badgers in 2015, O’Brien scored three goals in 19 games last season at NDSU. … As a senior for the Spartans in 2014, she was named first-team all-state and finished her senior campaign with 92 points and 40 goals. … She is the daughter of Bill and Heidi O’Brien and has one brother, Eddy. … She is an accounting major at NDSU.
