The following is another “Have Fun or Get Out of the Way” column by Don Leighton and his alter ego, Lance Boyle.

The initial Jim Weinandt “Don’t Ever Give Up!” Scholarship was awarded in 2008 and each year thereafter to graduating seniors of Northwestern High School who exemplify Jim’s humble personality, commitment to Northwestern, work ethic and don’t-ever-give-up attitude.

Jim was a long-time coach, teacher, mentor and friend to all he met while employed at NHS for many years. He passed away in August of 2001.

Including this year’s awards, more than $16,000 in scholarships have been provided. Thanks to the continued generosity of tournament sponsors and to the golfers, the Jim Weinandt Scholarship is highly sought after at Northwestern.

Although the initial intent was to award one scholarship yearly, due to the high number of applicants, multiple scholarships has been the norm. This year’s recipients were Carmen Ormstom from Lake Nebagamon and Brittany Copp and David Rautio from Brule.

This year’s tournament is Saturday, Aug. 15 at Botten’s Green Acres in Lake Nebagamon.

Brad and Jody Botten, and their family and staff, are wonderful hosts of the tournament and are also an integral part of its continued success. Great food and a great time is guaranteed.  Get there early for breakfast because Jody also makes the “World’s greatest American fries.”

Four- or five-person teams will compete for prizes in three different categories - men, mixed and 55-and-older.

Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews will “attend” the scramble. Well, at least authentic autographed framed jerseys will attend and be raffled along with other great items that any golfer or sports fan would love to have.

If you are able to provide tournament support as a sponsor, that would be great. If not, your presence at the tournament as a golfer, a friend of Jim or in support of the scholarship recipients, you would be adding to the fun.

For information call Botten’s Green Acres at 715-374-2567. Entry fees of $35 per person includes golf, a chance to win prizes, a chance to take Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews home, a tee-shirt designed by Tina Prior of Shirts Unlimited, more fun than you thought possible, great food and a chance to have a mini-reunion with friends and former classmates.

The Lance and Billy Meteorological Society promises a few clouds, 80 degrees and winds from the SW at 7-12 mph. Perfect weather for golf, food, fun and helping worthy graduates of Northwestern High School realize their dreams of attending college.
