The Twin Ports' college hockey teams felt the brunt of the latest COVID-19 surge thanks to omicron this weekend. Five of the six NCAA Division I and III men's and women's programs in Duluth and Superior had games canceled or postponed between Thursday and Sunday due to healthy and safety protocols.
The stories behind the declining enrollment numbers include more young people choosing to work full time, a faded link between many high school students and support systems last year, improving four-year graduation rates and fewer international students.
“Neither one of us really wanted to drive to each other’s place," said UMD coach Scott Sandelin about playing at a neutral site somewhere between Madison and Duluth.
