Another twist in Grand Forks summer baseball as league cuts season short

After coming to an unexpected pause last week, the Red River Pilots season will not restart as the Expedition League is wrapping up its season early. The summer collegiate wood-bat league will play its championship series this week, which is nearly a month earlier than expected.

This news comes less than a week after Red River Pilots players and its head coach Matty Holem left Grand Forks midseason, citing player concerns and poor management. Since then a second team, North Iowa, ended its season early as well.

2023 recruiting class continues to take shape for NDSU football

North Dakota State landed Lemont (Ill.) High School’s Noah Taylor, a defensive prospect with position versatility.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Taylor verbally committed to NDSU for football Monday, July 4, and projects to play either safety or linebacker for the Bison, he said.

NDSU offered Taylor a couple days ago after he attended a three-day camp in Fargo.

“I absolutely loved it there,” Taylor said. “I was able to stay on campus so I experienced all of it. All the coaches were very cool with me. … I’m excited to be a Bison and join the community.”

Local baseball teams come together to play in honor of Jim Pettersen

For the third straight year, local legion baseball teams came together to play the game they love in honor of Jim Pettersen, Fargo Post 2's longtime chairman who passed away in 2020 from COVID-19.

Fargo Post 400, West Fargo, and Moorhead swept their doubleheaders while Fargo Post 2 split a pair of games against Manitoba to open the tournament.

Kienholz chose Washington, but NDSU is now a national recruiting factor

We're in the heart of college recruiting season as commits keep rolling in for North Dakota State and the University of North Dakota.

As you see the list of offers coming in for these newly minted college players, there was one player hanging out there until about 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon that could have put NDSU at another level.

Pierre, South Dakota native Lincoln Kienholz is a three-star ranked quarterback who has blown up the recruiting world over the last two months. Kienholz has offers from over 20 schools, NDSU being one of them.

Sheyenne weightlifter adds national title to list of championships

Another local high school weightlifter is bringing home some national championship hardware.

Sheyenne junior Nic Renner won a title in the 96 kilogram weight class at the USA Weightlifting National Championships on Monday night. His final results, lifting a combined 566 pounds in the snatch and clean and jerk, beat the runner-up by 63 pounds.

Gray pitched the Twins to 11-1 win with seven scoreless innings on emotional day

Sonny Gray let himself feel the full range of emotions on Monday. He let those emotions fuel him and then funneled them into one of his best starts of the season. And afterwards, he had a long embrace in the first base dugout with pitching coach Wes Johnson, a man whom he has become close to over the course of the past few months.

A day after news broke that Johnson would be leaving to take the pitching coach job at Louisiana State University, Gray went out and pitched the Twins to an 11-1 win with seven scoreless innings against the Guardians at Progressive Field on Monday night.

A finish for the ages at biggest golf tournament in FM area

Golfers around the region battled the conditions for the 59th Red River Amateur Championship. After three days of competition, It was a fight till the 18th hole in both the mens and women's division.

In the women's division, it was a three way tie between NDSU's Leah Skaar, Emily Isrealson and Becca Tschertter heading into the final hole. Skaar was able to finish the job shooting par becoming the first woman to win the tournament.

Fargo's former Little League stars leading Post 2

When the heat of the summer rises, Fargo Post 2 usually does as well.

Post 2 has won 16 of its first 18 games to begin 2022, scoring five or more runs in 14 of those games.

Most high school kids are getting to go on vacation when the summer arrives. For Legion baseball players like those with Post 2, getting on the field is their vacation.

NDSU Football's 2023 recruiting class rapidly rising with six commits already

NDSU Football's 2023 recruiting class is rapidly rising as the Bison picked up two new commits on Wednesday.

The day started with Jailen Duffie's commitment, a cornerback out of Illinois.

The cornerback had offers from 19 division one programs, including FBS and the top schools in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Bismarck native and former NDSU quarterback Carson Wentz returned to Fargo Tuesday along with some of the most recognizable names in Bison football for the third-annual AO1 Foundation charity softball game at Newman Outdoor Field

Festivities included a home run derby, and the main event: a nine-inning softball game that pitted team offense against team defense, all to benefit the various ministries of Wentz's foundation.
