As a resident of Superior and an outdoor enthusiast I am very proud of our Superior Municipal Forest. Our city forest is 4,400 acres of natural habitat and is the third largest forest within a city in the nation.

It is one of the best remaining examples of a boreal forest in the state of Wisconsin. Many people take advantage of our wonderful forest during all seasons. The forest has trails used by hikers, mountain and road bikers, cross country skiers and skijorers, snowshoers and snowmobilers, and many more outdoor activities. It boasts an archery range and an outdoor classroom.

I often take advantage of our forest and on a recent run I found it to be in a sorry state.

In a two-mile stretch along 42nd Street I saw, along with piles of random trash, one refrigerator, two mattresses, two washing machines, three recliners, four television sets and six dryers.

I am ashamed of and outraged by the way we are treating our forest. It is not a dump. There are so many other legal ways to take care of our trash. There is no excuse for such actions.

Come on Superior, we can do better!
