Walter “Pete” J. Herrick

Walter “Pete” J. Herrick, Jr., 84, Superior, WI resident, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 5, 1936 in Superior, WI to Walter and Grace (Miller) Herrick. He was the oldest of five children.

He married Josephine Borreson on September 21, 1957 in Superior and just celebrated sixty-three years of marriage. Eventually they became parents to five children.

He joined the United States Navy in 1954 and retired after twenty years of service in 1974 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He earned numerous awards during his Navy career. He was a Korean and Vietnam war veteran. His tour of duty took him all over the world in defense of his country. His last mission involved mine cleaning operations in Haiphong Harbor and the coastal waters of North Vietnam in 1973. He then went on to work at a local health care facility in Superior as head of maintenance and retired in 2000.

He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, V.F.W. and D.A.V. Pete was an avid reader and self-educator and over the years he was able to complete various courses, including one as an electrician. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and they would take weekly road trips to Black Bear Casino. He loved his family and always made them laugh, even during his last days he was making us smile. His sense of humor extended beyond the family to others that he would talk to. He also enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers.

Pete is survived by his wife, Josephine “Joey”; children, Mike (Dede) Herrick, Brenda Herrick, Kim (Bob) Thoen, Debbie (Todd) Williams, all of Superior, WI, and Patrick Herrick, Duluth, MN; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob (Jan) Herrick, Jim (Barb) Herrick and Don (Cora) Herrick; one sister, Irene Marin; and further survived by Aunts, Dorothy Fortin, and Beverly Johnson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Grace; and granddaughter, Autumn.

The immediate family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice in the care they provided to dad, as well as those that sent their condolences to our family.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Services will be supported by members of the Patriot Guard of Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Pallbearers for the service will be Mike Herrick, Brenda Herrick, Todd Williams, Eric Williams, Sean Herrick, Nathan Granquist. Honorary pallbearer will be Kim Thoen.
