Ruth Joyce Hofacre, 90, Superior resident, died Tuesday, November 10 at Twin Ports Health Services, Superior. She was born on June 4, 1930 in St. John’s, Newfoundland to Joseph and Phoebe Holloway.

She worked as a Ward Clerk at Superior Memorial Hospital, now St. Mary’s of Superior, and worked as a matron for the Douglas County Jail for many years prior to her retirement.

Being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was always first in Ruth’s life. She was the epitome of unconditional love. She insisted on keeping cash on hand in case any of her family or friends might need it. She would literally give you the shirt off her back and she did many times. Everyone always came first in her life; she always put herself last. Even in her last several months living in the memory care unit, she maintained her sense of humor; she could always laugh and tease about her lack of memory. She recently was heard answering this question “Well Ruth, where would you like your insulin shot today?” with “In your butt!”

Ruth is survived by three daughters, Roberta (Dave) Lindemann, Superior, WI, Valerie Walker, Cave Creek, AZ and Pamela (Jim) Donaldson, Eau Claire, WI; two sons, Mike Hofacre, Bismarck, ND and Steve Hofacre, Superior, WI; five grandchildren, Angela Chiles, Superior WI, Jennifer (Jim) Kurosky, Superior, WI, Nicole Dandrea, Superior, WI, Kathryn (Chad) Turnwald, Cave Creek, AZ and Daniel (Arleth) Walker, Phoenix, AZ; seven great grandchildren, Joe & Brody Boone, Jacob Schuman, Samantha Dandrea, Tyler & Nathen Kurosky and Deklan Turnwald, brother-in-law Richard Hofacre, Minneapolis along with several nieces and nephews in the United States and Newfoundland. In addition, she leaves behind her close friends, Sally Paine and Jim Weber and her dear birthday lunch ladies, Sally, Pushka, Annie, Margo, Judy, Mary Jo and Carol.

She is preceded in death by her father, mother, son, Mitch Hofacre, ex-husband, James Hofacre, four sisters and three brothers.

The family would like to thank the staff at Twin Ports Health Services, especially those led by Shelly of the Memory Care Unit, for the wonderful family-like care they gave Ruth.

Due to the pandemic, a burial service and celebration of life will be held in the spring.

The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements. To leave an online condolence or to sign the guestbook, please visit www.lenroot-maetzold.com.
