Richard J.(Dick) Unterberger

Richard J. (Dick) Unterberger, 93, left this world on July 20th, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas, after a short illness.  Dick was born on Christmas Day, 1928 in the small Mississippi River town of Lansing, Iowa.  He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.  He lived in Superior for a number of years, as well as Long Lake in Iron River, Mexico Beach, Florida, and San Antonio.

Dick was a life-long retailer, starting his career with JC Penney, including managing the downtown Superior Penney store, owning Viking Liquor and Globe News in Superior.  Long being a military history enthusiast, he began a second career as a militaria trader and flea marketer, selling military items at flea markets in Hayward, Wisconsin and Panama City, Florida.  All his life, Dick had a zest for life and learning and was genuinely interested in others.  He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the wonderful staff at the Laurels Assisted Living facility in San Antonio.

Dick is survived by Kay, his wife of 68 years, and children Tom (Jill), Superior, Mary (John) Whisenhunt, San Antonio, and Rob, New York City, grandchildren Katie (Andy) Fenner, Eau Claire, Ryan Unterberger, Minneapolis, and Patrick (Sarah Erickson) Unterberger, Minneapolis, great-granchildren Bria and Abram Fenner, Eau Claire, and nephews Tony Meyers, Troy Meyers, and Tracy Myers.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Paul and his sister Mailu.
