John Leonard West passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 29, 2022, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. The tumor was found on Feb. 28th, and he was diagnosed with stage 4 on March 22 of this year. He was 56 years old.

He was born Sept. 13, 1965, in Superior, Wisconsin. He lived most of his life in or around Superior. He lived briefly in other Minnesota and Wisconsin cities, but always returned to Superior. He attended St. Francis and Nelson Dewey Elementary Schools, East Junior High, and graduated from Superior Senior High in 1984.

John was a hard-working man. He spent many hours cutting firewood, maintaining his lawn, keeping the fires going in his garage and home, and fixing/organizing any and everything. He enjoyed camping, campfires, boating, and snowmobiling to name a few. He was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan, loved watching late models on the dirt track, and a Dallas Cowboys fan. John was always on the go - even from a young age (skipping the afternoons of his first grade with his cousin). He was a thoughtful, reserved, loving man. While he was born on Friday the 13 and felt he had nothing but bad luck, he was amazed at all the blessings our Heavenly Father provided. He was a devoted husband, an amazing father, and a caring son.

He proudly worked for 22 years for General Mills in both the Superior and Duluth ports. Throughout the years, John also worked OTR for Timberline Trucking, cabinetry work, cleaning services, railroad maintenance for Loram, and lawn maintenance for Robinson Lake Resort.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Arvid and Gladys Nordquist, and his paternal grandparents, Grover and Mildred West.

John is survived by his wife of 19 years, Linda; daughter, Jaclyn (Neal) Scharte; son, Johnny; stepson, Kyle; his parents, Tom and Patricia; his brothers, Mike (Jen) and Ryan (Katie); granddaughter, Evelyn Scharte; nephews, aunts and uncles and many close friends.

He will be greatly missed! Go rest high on that mountain! Son, your work on earth is done.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 9th from 1:00 until the 5:00 p.m. memorial service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19th St., with Fr. Andrew Ricci as officiant. In honor of John, jeans attire is highly recommended.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to an educational fund for Johnny.
