Dolly Kimmes Cosgrove
Dolly Kimmes Cosgrove, 95, of Gordon, Wisconsin, passed away in her home with her family by her side on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, All Saints’ Day.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1927, to William “Bill” and Phoebe (Harty) Kimmes. Dolly was baptized at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior. She married John “Jack” Clayton Cosgrove, Sr. in 1947, also at the Cathedral. They lovingly raised their nine children in Minneapolis.
Dolly volunteered at Hennepin County Medical Center beginning in 1962, volunteered at the Branch 3 Homeless Shelter in Minneapolis, cooked meals and raised funds for Native American funerals in the 1990’s, and volunteered at Benet Hall at St. Scholastica in the 2000’s.
She was a devout Catholic, and served as a Eucharistic minister, lay minister of prayer, brought communion to the Middle River nursing home weekly, counted the collections, and hosted weekly catechism classes at her home for many years.
Dolly will be remembered for her prayer book, “My Favorite Prayers” which she wrote and printed. First edition September 2008, 10th edition August 2020. Dolly has distributed, free of charge, over 25,000 prayer books over the years. She donated prayer books to many individuals and organizations, including all students of the Catholic Schools within the diocese of Superior.
Dolly enjoyed many hobbies including duck hunting, walleye fishing, and cooking for a crowd. She wrote her own cookbook, named “The Cottage Recipes: My Friends, My Family, My Own”, comprised of nearly 450 recipes - most of which were paired with a short story about her family or friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Jack, sons William Cosgrove and John Cosgrove, sisters, Marion Kimmes and Clara Kimmes (McGill) and brothers, Peter Kimmes and William Kimmes.
Survivors include her children Lory (Tom) Worthing, Phoebe Hallett, Bridget (Mike) McGill, Thomas (Carolyn) Cosgrove, Mary Cosgrove Ford, Katie (Jesus) Villasenor, Jim (Robin) Cosgrove; her brother, Robert (Diane) Kimmes; her sister, Kathy (Joe) Cleveland; her sisters-in-law, Martha Storm Cosgrove and Mary Chandler Cosgrove; her 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 11, 2022, from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior, WI with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci and Fr. Balaraju Policetty as officiants. Interment will be in the Gordon Cemetery.
