Debra L. Olson, 64, of Superior, died Monday, March 7, 2022 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, after a hard fought battle with liver disease.
She was born March 14, 1957 in Superior and had been a lifelong Superior and Duluth resident.
Deb worked at St. Mary’s Hospital as a nurse for 43 years, first on 4 East Orthopedics and then Outpatient Surgery. She loved her job and was darn good at it. She especially adored her fellow nurses, who became friends and stayed family.
Deb was a hoot. She loved to laugh, beat everyone at board games, and work puzzles late into the night. She was a voracious reader, had great taste in music, and the collector’s impulse of a magpie. She was strong and stubborn and beautiful beyond words, and we will never stop missing her.
As much as she loved her work, friends, and family, her children and grandchildren were the center of her life. We are so honored to have been shaped by her kind hands, comforted by her strong hugs, and inspired by her charming wit. We love you forever mom.
Deb is survived by her siblings David (Marcia) Olson of Sun City West, AZ, Marlene (Ray) Patton of Blaine, MN, and Sandy (Chuck) LeMieux of Superior; her children, Rayna (Nathaniel) Fox of Minneapolis, MN, and Joshua (Kelsey) Wood of Superior; her many nieces and nephews; and her three grandchildren, Munroe Fox, Elling Fox, and Navi Wood.
She was preceded in death by her parents Emmanuel and Mary Olson; brother Raymond Olson; brother-in-law Jerry Frasier; and nephew, Joseph Olson.
Even in her passing, Deb has chosen to help others by participating in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Anatomy Bequest Program, which supports education for future health professionals and continued advancements in medical care through research.
The family will be planning a celebration of Deb’s life this summer. Should anyone desire, donations can be made in Deb’s honor to the American Liver Foundation.
