Benard A. ‘Oscar’ Smith, Jr.

Bernard A. ‘Oscar’ Smith, Jr., 70, of Superior, died Monday, December 6, 2021. at Essentia-St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

Bernard was born on January 29, 1951, in Washburn, WI, the son of Bernard and Margaret (Daley) Smith, Sr. He married Jacqueline Hansen on April 19, 1986.

Oscar was a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He served his country with the US Army.

He had sailed on various Great Lakes Vessels as a Fireman and Oiler. He then worked for the University of Wisconsin Superior Powerplant as a power plant operator and retired after 35 years as the Power Plant Superintendent.

Oscar enjoyed playing guitar, fishing, and riding motorcycles. He was an artist who enjoyed painting, especially with watercolors and had taken classes with Tony Yaworski. He was very mechanically inclined and built wooden oar boats and sailing ships.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bernard ‘Benny’ Smith III; brother, James Daley; sisters, Kathleen ‘Bushel’ Smith, Theresa ‘Tuna Fish’ Smith, and Rose Bud McIvor; nephews, Max and Jesse Kasper; niece, Tammy Flonnes; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, George and Florence Hansen.

Oscar is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jackie; son, John Henry Smith of Superior; sisters, Tina Dembroski of Superior, Liz Flonnes of Trego, and Barbara Anderson of Superior; good friend, Tom Love; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Ike.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 9th from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19th St. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
