Katherine M. ‘Katie’ Sweeney

Katherine M. ‘Katie’ Sweeney, 90, of Superior, went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at her residence surrounded by her family, as a result of complications from post-polio syndrome.
Katherine was born in Superior on January 29, 1931, the daughter of John and Flora (Willoughby) Melin.
She worked for several years as a teacher’s aide in the Special Education program in the Superior School District. She also worked as a caterer with The Patio Café.
Kathy contracted Polio in the 1950’s. Afterwards, she continued to try as many activities as she could including golf, skiing, bowling, and painting. Katie was an accomplished self-taught sketcher and painter who created many beautiful art pieces. She immensely enjoyed being a part of the Old Town Art Group.
She was a sponsor for Paul Massawe through New Life International in Tanzania. To this day, they continued a loving and caring relationship. For her, life was all about family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of many years, John ‘Jack’ Sweeney; grandsons, Sean and Brady Moder; great grandson, Andrew Potter; brothers, Johnny and Bud Melin; and sisters, Elsie Sandahl and Ruth Scharte.
Kathy is survived by her children, Kathleen (Timothy) Moder of Superior, Brian (Sandy) Sweeney of Superior, Valerie Sweeney of Superior, John (Julie) Sweeney of Foxboro, Claudia (Tom) Dresel of Superior and Kyle (Val) Sweeney of Superior; 21 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and childhood friend, Geri Johnson.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:30 p.m. funeral service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th St, Superior. Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci will officiate.
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her granddaughters.
