Bernice Marion Taipale

Bernice Marion Taipale

Bernice Marion Taipale, 86, passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at Prairie Point Rehabilitation Center in Altoona, WI.

Bernice was born March 5, 1932 in Superior to Audina and Eino Rantala. She graduated from Iron River High School in 1949. On July 4 of that year she married Walter Taipale. Together they raised six children on a hobby farm in Maple. She loved having the whole family around, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who would always get a big squeeze from grandma.

Bernice was active in community organizations including 4H and Homemakers, which she served at state level in 1986. She loved knitting, crocheting and quilting, and taught these through adult vocational education classes. Bernice also loved to sing, and in her younger years sang at weddings, funerals and other events. She owned and operated The Recovery Room, a furniture upholstery business with close friend, Arlene Makela. Never afraid to try new things, at age 55, Bernice went to Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, completing a one-year certificate program in word processing, and then worked at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in Superior, retiring after eight years of service.

Bernice and Walter enjoyed snowmobiling with friends. They also loved to travel. With the family, they went on many cross-country road trips or just off on a drive. She flew to visit daughters in Arizona and England. Bernice loved antiques and rummage sales, and reading late into the night.

Bernice was a truly special person. She will be remembered for her kindness, friendship, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor, which she shared with everyone that crossed her path.

Mom always said how proud she was of all of us. Mom, we are proud of you and we will all miss you very much.
